Balsa and basswood are used to construct model planes. Balsa wood is so lightweight it may surprise you the first time you pick up a board or slab of the material. It has a high strength-to-weight ratio, making it suitable for structures such as homemade gliders, planes and even racing yachts.
Basswood. The wood has an indistinct grain that is straight and has a fine, uniform texture. WORKING PROPERTIES Basswood machines well and is easy to work with hand tools, making it a premier carving wood. It nails, screws, and glues fairly well and can be sanded, and stained, to a good, smooth finish.
If, on the other hand, it is cut with the annular rings running through the thickness of the sheet (C-grain), quarter grain, it will be very rigid edge to edge. When grain direction is less clearly defined (B-grain), the sheet will have properties intermediate between A and C grain.
