Rammed Earth Construction. Conduits are also placed into the wall to allow water plumbing pipes to be inserted where required. The same method for building structural walls in buildings can be applied when building retaining walls made with rammed earth encased in steel-belted rubber. Depending on the load the retaining wall is retaining, the batter and other adjustments should be considered. Some tire retaining walls have been built up to 25 ft. high.

Traditional technology repeatedly rammed the end of a wooden pole into the earth mixture to compress it.
Control layers. Thermal control — A rammed earth wall requires an additional thermal control layer in hot or cold climates (see Thermal Mass vs. Insulation sidebar). This layer can be on the interior, exterior or center of the wall, and is typically a rigid insulation.
